Privacy policy

TempoPiano, the practice app of TempoSuite.

Effective: [date of publication].

TempoPiano is a piano-learning app made by [developer name, as registered in Google Play Console] ("we"), part of TempoSuite, software for music-teaching studios. This policy covers the TempoPiano app for Android. The TempoSuite web portal, used by studios and parents, has its own privacy notice, which a parent or guardian reads before a child's app can link to a studio.

TempoPiano is made for learners of all ages, including children. We designed it so that it collects as little as possible.

What stays on your device

  • Microphone sound. When the app listens to your piano, the sound is analysed on the device to work out which notes you played. It is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
  • Your progress. Stars, lessons, practice time, players' names and settings are saved on the device.
  • Songs you import, write or scan. Scanning sheet music from photos happens on the device. If you choose to use your own scanning computer instead (Settings), photos go only to the address you enter, which is your computer, not ours.

Ads

The app is free and shows an occasional full-screen ad from Google AdMob, only after you finish a song or lesson, never while you play. Every ad request tells Google to treat the user as a child and as under the age of consent: ads are never personalised (no interest-based ads, no remarketing), and they are limited to content rated for general audiences. The app does not have access to the Android advertising ID.

To show and measure ads and prevent fraud, Google's Mobile Ads SDK collects your device's IP address (which can indicate a general location), how the app and ads are used (such as app launches, taps and ad views), performance information, and the app set ID. Google handles this information under its own policies: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and https://support.google.com/admob/answer/6223431. Where the law requires it (for example in the European Economic Area and the UK), Google's consent message may appear, and Settings → About → Ad privacy choices lets you change your choice.

Devices linked to a music studio (below) show no ads.

A studio using TempoSuite can give a student a code to link the app. A studio can only issue a code after a parent or guardian has agreed to the studio's privacy notice. Once linked, the app sends to our studio server (https://app.temposuite.ca):

  • practice results: the songs and lesson activities played, with stars, score, accuracy and speed;
  • practice time per day and progress through the lessons;
  • the device's name and type and the app's version, and a device code the server issues.

This is shown to the student's teachers at that studio and to the student's parents or guardians, and is used to provide the service (assignments, goals, reminders and the studio's branding in the app). It is not used for advertising and is not sold or shared with anyone else. The studio decides with the family how long it is kept; a parent or guardian can withdraw consent (which disconnects the device at once) or delete the student's data in the portal at any time, and the studio can delete a student. Choosing Leave studio in the app stops all sending. The device code and the waiting practice records are not included in Android backups.

The app does not ask for or send a child's email address, phone number, location, photos or recordings, and has no chat, public profiles or social features.

Notifications

If a teacher or parent sets a practice reminder, the app schedules it on the device itself; no push service is used.

Security

Everything the app sends to our server, and everything the ads SDK sends to Google, is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS). The studio server stores device codes and passwords only in hashed form.

Children

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children in the app. Information about a child reaches our servers only through a studio link that a parent or guardian has consented to, as described above. Parents and guardians can review, export or delete their child's studio data in the TempoSuite portal, or by contacting us.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your data, and to object to or restrict its use. Contact us at hello@temposuite.ca. For ad data held by Google, see Google's privacy policy.

Changes

We will post any change to this policy here with a new effective date, and tell studios and linked families about important changes.
